ART
QUILTS:
Tradition & Innovation
July 15 – August
12, 2006
From
July 15 – August
12, 2006,
The Folk Tree
Collection
presents ART
QUILTS:
Tradition & Innovation,
an exhibition
featuring
contemporary
interpretations
of the quilt
genre by fifteen
artists. The
individuals
represented
are primarily
from southern
California,
many with
backgrounds
in the fine
arts, and
all use the
quilt form
as their“canvas” for
very personal
expressions
- both abstract
and recognizable
in nature.
A reception
for the artists
is scheduled
for Saturday,
July
15, from 2-
6 P.M.
The “art
quilt” began
garnering
recognition
in the United
States in
the
1970s when
fine artists
started using
fabric in
unconventional
and
non-utilitarian
ways, departing
from the historic
function of
the quilt
as clothing,
drapery and
bed covering.
The 1971 Whitney
Museum
exhibition “Abstract
Design in
American Quilts” further
enhanced the
significance
of the quilt
as an art
form, and
no longer
relevant only
in domestic
settings.
In the book
The Art Quilt,
Robert Shaw
defines
the original
quilt as three
layers of
fabric enclosing
a central
core
of wadding
or batting.
The artists
included in
this exhibition
often
start their
pieces in
this manner,
using it as
a catalyst
for
innovation
in form and
content.
Artists
selected
for the show
include: Betty
Amador, Charlotte
Bird,
Joanell Connolly,
Cindy Cooksey,
Sumi Foley,
Lucia Vigil
Frances, Janet
Ghio,
Rose Hughes,
Rebecca
Janes, Mavis
Leahy, Jill
Le Croissette,
Cindy
Rinne,
Karen Rips,
Connie Rohman,
Dinah Sargeant,
and Kristen
Willett.
Several
artists,
among them
Charlotte
Bird, Joanell
Connolly,
Connie
Rohman and
Dinah Sargeant,
dye or paint
their own
cloth. Rose
Hughes’ hand
painted pieces
are inspired
by her natural
environs,
especially
the hills
of California’s
coastal and
inland landscape.
Sumi Foley
transforms
old kimonos
and “abandoned” fabric
to create
her hanging
narratives.
Cindy Rinne,
Cindy Cooksey,
and Mavis
Leahy embellish
their
work with
beads, buttons
and vintage
elements.
Janet Ghio
works in
three dimensions,
creating shrines
that refer
to the iconography
of
other cultures,
particularly
Mexico and
Africa. Some
of the artists
hand-stitch,
while others
use a machine,
but they all
share a love
of
sewing. And,
they are equally
intrigued
by the symbolic
and technical
possibilities
of the multiple
layers of
quilting.

Folk Tree
Collection
